  Had a simillar problem with the ex-wife's Cabrio. After swapping out the 
battery (she didn't mention anything about lights dimming the night before), 
going through three alternators from a mech who only charged for one and no 
labor after two weeks of replacing them and having to return the car to them, 
we were directed to an electrical specialist. After he was told by the mech 
what had happened, he checked it over and installed a new wiring harness from 
the alternator to the battery for cost. 
Just something to think about if you go through another alternator or two.
