[tech] bubbles in the fuel tank? (keeps dying too)

last night, coming home on a very cold night, the scirocco starting acting
funny. It died after it idled for about 5 minutes, then on the way home it
would buckle as I gave it gas after each shift. As long as I didn't give it
too much it was fine, but if too much gas was given it would buckle
again...almost like running on 1 or 2 cylinders.

Today, it sputtered and died, then it started and ran fine for about 3-4
minutes when it would die. After each time it died, I noticed that there was
a "bubbling water" type sound (like blowing bubbles with a straw in a glass
of water).

I did manage to check the timing during all of this and it is set correctly.
New plugs, wires, distributor, rotor, air & fuel filters and all that. Just
replaced the O2 sensor earlier this year. I didn't find any vacuum leaks.

Any ideas?
