My money's on the bad synchro's causin the prob. I had the same problem you 
had, and found someone to rebuild the transaxel with new synchro's and now 
it shifts real nice- but still somewhat tight into 2nd when cold. I am not 
using redline. Some say it helps. I tried it in another tranny that had this 
same prob and it made no diff. If your flange leaks I'd say your ripe to do 
the rebuild before you spill expensive redline into the streets. In any case 
this  problem seems inherent in 020 transaxels with high miles >100K
