RE: super shifting linkage problems

Check the bushings and the plastic ball (do they call that a relay lever or
something?) for wear, replacing if necessary. Then follow the Bentley
procedure for shift linkage adjustment. Sounds like your lockout "finger"
is too close to the plate under the shifter. I had the opposite problem in
my '84, and it would go into reverse instead of first.

Check the shifter to see that the holes in the shifter and floor line up
properly. This will verify that the shifter hasn't slid and caused the
adjustment to go bad. Then take it out of gear and look at the lockout
finger under the shifter. Measure the gap between that finger and the
lockout plate. For the 5 speed, I think the gap is 15mm, but I don't have
the manual in front of me. If it's off, loosen the clamp at the front of
the rod and rotate the rod to get the correct gap.

I've heard you shouldn't mess with that adjustment, but I haven't heard why,
and I have done it successfully. (If anyone knows why, please elaborate.)
