spedo cable?

The 16v GLI that i have just bought does not have a working spedo or odo.  
One of the 2 spedo cables is broken i believe.  I am also getting the  
bouncy spedo cable in my 16v rocco.  Are the spedo cables a dealer only part 
that will cost me lots of $$$ or can i get them from say Potterman?  I would 
like to know how fast my GLI is going down the snowy Vermont roads! :-)
