Fuel and Oil drain from airbox! Long but need urgent help!

Ok,...on my 1978 CIS 1.7 Rocco after changing the clutch and replacing the
distributor cap,....the car would crank fine but never run. After
inspecting the fuel distributor for hours today and tweaking the mixture I
notice the mixture screw (hex) was not even in there correctly. So I switch
the upper air box/venturi part and screw back down the fuel distributor.
Crank, crank, crank,....bam it comes to life. Not running good at all, but
at least running. So I fiddle with the new fuel mixture screw. I close it
all the way, (counter clock wise), then open it until the injectors spray.
Except they are spraying even with the screw all the way closed. So I
decide to hell with it and I end up the the screw turned 51/2 times out and
start it up. It runs pretty well for about 15 seconds then starts to sound
as though it is flooded. All of a sudden I hear "back fire" in the air box
so I shut it down. Then I see dark fluid pouring from my air box. (from the
air inlet opening) Turns out that it is oil and gas! WTF! Someone please
tell me what I have done here.
Thanks,
chris
