Shifting problem

When i try to get into 1st gear, sometimes it's really hard to get it into 
gear. usually when i start going from 2nd to 1st it's fine. but when i go 
from 4th to 1st, it's really hard. like really tough.. i have to force it. 
is something wrong with the linkages? anybody know anything about this?
also is there anyway to make the clutch a little softer? it's like i have to 
stomp on the pedal.

any suggestions or comments would be great
