changing/adding MTF?

Hi all,

My transmission has recently been diagnosed as having a small leak. 
Since I don't know how long this has been going on, it is something of
concern.  But, I can't find the transmission dipstick to check the level.
 According to my owners manual:

"Both transmission and final drive are combined in one housing.  The
lubricant used is used is hypoid oil which does not have to be changed.
Should the need arise to add oil, it should only be done with the
necessary workshop equipment."

So, am I royally screwed?  Is there anything I can do, or will I be
taking my car to the local VW dealer (or, more likely, a VW specialist
mechanic) and signing over my entire financial aid check (which I really
hope I get in a month or so)?  Does anyone in Northern/Central California
have the "necessary workshop equipment" and be willing to help me out?
