[mk2] engine noises

after replacing the water pump (and just about everything else 
associated), i find that i still have the same engine noise. it honestly 
sounded like a dying water pump (at least from what i've heard on 
non-vw's; never had one die on a vw before). i'm thinking it could be 
the alternator (sort of like a dying bearing sound), though when i 
dragged out the stethescope it sounded fine. i know the p-side motor 
mount is shot, but i can't see that causing the problem. any other ideas 
of what it might be? thanx.
