I'm not sure what advice to give you about the sound under your hood since I
can't hear it, but...

On a 16V I'd expect a valve job to cost you about $350 plus about $10 for
each valve guide that needs to be replaced.

As far as your clutch...The way to test it is to accelerate hard in 2nd and
then up-shift directly into 5th. If the engine bogs down, then the clutch is
grabbing and presumably OK. But if it is slipping, the motor will wind up
without pulling the car, almost like you have the clutch pressed in.
