Re: Engine Probs, But Much Rejoicing...

Hey there Ian -

It's just the tach that seems to flip out, but at the same
time it's unrelated to the engine issues. About 75% of the time, the
engine will run like sh*t at start (no power, sounds like it's
missing like a freak) and the exhaust smells like a motor boat, which
makes me wonder if it's the knock sensor not engaging. I know the
grounds are all good, and the wiring/contacts have been hit with carb
cleaner/dialectic grease a few times. I've got a new fuse box (all
greased up), a new idle stabilizer, a new distributor/hall sender...
next up is the knock sensor and O2 sensor. I'm kinda playing the
expensive guessing game. Nate Pierce says it might be the control
pressure regulator - any thoughts?
I'm changing out my downpipe this weekend so I don't pass out
from the fumes while driving the little beastie, and while I'm there
I'll drop in the new O2 sensor. Hopefully I'll have time to mess
behind the dash.

-It sounds like you've got ground troubles. Is your ground connection at the
-coil clean? When you say the instruments whack out, is it just the tach?
-If it's just the tach, then your problem is with the coil. If it's other
-instruments too, then your dashboard ground is having trouble. As for the
-high idle, grounds could be causing that, but it's also likely the idle
-stabilizer valve. Take it off and spray it with carb cleaner.

-I doubt the knock sensor has anything to do with your problems. The knock
-sensor would just retard your timing and you would notice it has a simple
-lack of power. I think.
