I would say get someone to do it for you. The older
systems use R12 (Freon). You can not buy this in the
stores anymore for it is bad for the ozone. If you put
the new stuff in you will need to change the seals and
the reciever/dryer. Also you probably can not find the
leaks by eye (unless the old freon/oil was colored)
because they are usually at the valves (for charging) 

I would believe that Potterman or Mark could score you
some new seals if you want to convert, but the
drawback to that is it is not as cold as R12 and our
old systems were not designed to run the new stuff so
it will never match the R12. If you get the system all
leak free though it should last for years.

Oh, and don't freak out when you hear the price of
R12. Its up there.
