Flashing water temp light

When I cranked the Scirocco up this morning I saw the
usual flash of the water temp light, but it didn't
stop flashing like usual. I thought to myself WTF now!
I've sunk enough $ into this F'ing car in the past
three months to have bought that Corrado I got all wet
over back in December. But I remained calm then turned
off the ignition, re-cranked, no continuous light this
time, that lasted all of thirty seconds! So I decide I
need to get my ass in gear for my 22 mile sojourn to
work and just said the hell with it. I got about 1
mile down the road and hit a red light and decided to
give it one last try, turn the ignition off then back
on again, this time it remained off. 

Now the only problem(could be in my head), but as I
drove to work it seemed like the engine was running
hotter then usual. The water temp was just over 3/4,
and the Oil temp was at about 118C, I swear my water
temp never exceeded 1/2 and the Oil temp never seemed
to go over 105C. What is the norm for a basically
stock 16V?

I had no reoccurrence of the light episode on my
return trip from work, the water temp hovered around
2/3, and the Oil temp was the same as the morning.

Any hints/tips?
