16V Head work

I have not played around inside a 16V head before, so I am looking for a
little guidance before I dig into my new toy.

Is it common wisdom that 16V valve guides wear out in 100K miles?

Inspecting the head, they don't seem to have been leaking, the valve
stems are clean, and there is no play in any of them, so to my
experience they are sound.

How much can I take off the deck and still keep the (OEM) pistons out of
the valves? I know they are already an interference fit, but can I plane
0.0010? 0.0020? 0.0040? to bump compression a little?

Any other cheap mods I can do to bolster torque output, besides swap in
a 2.0L block ;)

Thanks.
