Frozen odometer

Hey,
    Yesterday on the way back from visiting an out of town friend my
odometer just quit working.  It remained frozen for the whole trip home,
which was about 150 miles!  Both the trip and regular odo are stuck.
This has happened once before, but then it magically started working
after about 20 miles.  Now it really seems to be fucked.
    First of all, how is the odometer driven in a 16v 88 w/ manual
tranny?  Is it integrated into the speedo cable?  If so, that has me
worried because the speedo is fine, so I doubt it's just a loose cable.
Anyway, any ideas you guys have would be great.
