Re: GTI, GLI, etc. - What do they mean?

> GTX = Same as GTI but used in Europe and elsewhere.

minor, but the Scirocco GTi was replaced in the lineup with the
Scirocco GTX about the 1984 model year.

For added confusion, Scirocco mk1s were available in the following
designations:

Scirocco
Scirocco L
Scirocco S
Scirocco LS
Scirocco TS
Scirocco GT
Scirocco GL
Scirocco GLi
Scirocco GTi

In addition to the MK2s mentioned,

There were:
Scirocco CL
Scirocco Scala
Scirocco GT II

The GTi was introed (Europe) in 1976 with the Scirocco GTi and Golf
GTi. These cars came with a 110hp 1588cc motor.

AFAIK, the GTX designation was never associated with the Golf, and in
europe the Golf GTi continues to this day.
