I have seen Acuras and Honda make more totally 100% stupid moves JUST LIKE
THIS and more so then any other car on the road.  Friend of mine compiled a
list once, and Acuras and Hondas together accounted for a greater majority of
'asshole' or 'stupid' maneauvers then anything else.  Counted alone,
the Hondas where actually just edged out by Chevy pickups...odd but
actually true. :)

Sounds like it might be a dead sensor, as a dead 'spot' on the sender.
Try filling up your tank, if it suddenly starts working again at
least you know it's not the wiring, the cluster, or the gauge.  Still
need to replace the sender though. :/
