Other people have caught this one - low gear oil. Check your seals and
watch for the dreaded SMS (self-machining syndrome) covered very well on
THE web page - www.scirocco.org.

If you have a stock exhaust manifold, you're not going to maximize the
gains from a performance cam. The general rule of thumb for performance
mods is to start with the exhaust, which is quite restrictive in its stock
form, and then make changes to the cam and intake. Get yourself a
dual-port manifold from an early A1, a TT downpipe and a 2" exhaust and
then maybe you'll notice the cam... Ditching the stock manifold is
probably the single largest bolt-on performance gain you can do to the JH
without going forced induction or NO2, and it's definitely the place to
start.

At the expense of the ashtray you can install additional gauages - My 84
has a voltmeter located beside the ashtray, and I plan on yanking both out
and installing a trio with a holder from an Audi 5000. I have seen panels
for sale for the MKII on one of the parts sites. At the expense of the
raido you install even more guages... That's one thing I like about the
A1 Jetta - there's a three guage cluster in the centre console, and you
can ditch the ashtray and install another 3 guage cluster, while still
keeping the functionality of your radio...

There's a link to just about every web-present tuner/performance/stock
parts depot on THE website ... www.scirocco.org -

Hope this info is usefull,
