Officially, VW introduced a version of the Scirocco in
1979 coinciding with the introduction of the VW 5sp
tranny. It was called the "Scirocco limited edtion
5spd" or something like that (I have the info at
home).

This Scirocco looked, smelled, and tasted like a
Scirocco S. The only difference that I could tell was
that there was no "S" on the Scirocco name plate.

VW may have later in the 1979 model year badged these
as "Scirocco S". I don't know for sure.

Obviously, there were definately 1980 and 1981
Scirocco S models.

Until I see a paint code for these blue "S" models, I
remain skeptical. In part because people often mistake
my silver Sciroccos for being "icy blue" (happened
last week). On my 1st 1981 Scirocco S (Cirrus Gray),
many of my friends thought it was dark green. I have a
friend with a showroom condition Cosmo Silver 1981
Scirocco S - he says that many people think his car is
blue as well.

I am ashamed to say that I have been a Scirocco Geek
since 1976 (bought my 1st in 1977) and I literally
haunted VW showrooms until the early 1980s waiting in
vain for VW to bring over the Scirocco GTi. I never
once saw one Scirocco S in any shade of blue. I live
in a large metropolitan area where Sciroccos always
sold well. I always look at every Scirocco that I see
- always have.
