Loss Of power?

I bought my '81 scirocco about 2 months ago and it used to have all the
power in the world, ive raced it against decked out hondas and kicked some
ass on straight aways, but know after i have put about 3000 miles on it it
is know up to 120k and about a quarter to half the power is gone from when i
got it? i heard that the valves need to be adjusted every couple thoussand
miles for good performance and i doubt anyone that owned this car ever did
that, so i was wondering if that would make a lot of difference, and if not
what i could do to get a little bit more power back into it?
