RE: Ignition problems

I just went through all that BS with a 2.0 16v.
First, the hall effect sender died on the side of the distributor. I replace the
entire distributor to the tune of $175. (good price! VW wanted $425) I installed
it and the car started and then immediately died.. it wouldn't start again. I
re-did all the tests and found that this time, the coil power stage died.

Test to make sure your coil is getting power:
Unplug the coil power stage connector and connect a voltmeter to the two end
conductors. Turn on the ignition. You should read near battery voltage. If you
aren't then the coil is not getting power.

Test to make sure your coil power stage is getting a signal from the hall effect
sender:
Plug an LED test light into the connectors with black and green wires. Crank the
car over. If the light flickers, the power stage is getting a signal but doing
nothing with it.

Test the coil:
Measure resistance (with a digital meter) between the 1(-) and 15(+) terminals
on the coil. It should be between 600-800 milli-ohms.
Measure resistance between 1(-) and the center terminal. It should be around
1600 milli-ohms.

I'm recalling all this from memory, so if something doesn't look right, just
ask.

Subject: Ignition problems

Hi,
I seem to be having one hell of a problem with my roccot. I've got no
spark from the coil at all anymore. I started the car yesterday to make
sure the new battery cable was on right. It ran 'bout a min. then just up
and died. tried to crank it over and it didn't start. So, pulled a plug
wire no spark. pulled ignition coil wire, no spark. Any suggestions would
be helpful. Also, does the ignition control unit go to fuse block at all,
or is it straight off the battery?
