I put all my money on the voltage regulator.  I had the SAME exact symptoms 
you had a couple years ago.  And the regulator had somewhat of an uneven 
wear, and they were worn down a bit.  Slapped a new regulator in and charged 
the battery up and it was back to normal.  Good luck
