Report: GM To Quit Making Two Cars
PONTIAC, Mich. (AP) -- General Motors Corp. plans to stop making the
Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird models next year, a published report
said Friday.

The Chevrolet Camaro and Pontiac Firebird and the Trans Am version of the
Firebird will be dropped from GM's product lineup in 2000, a senior GM
official told The Oakland Press of Pontiac.

``I'm not going to kid you, the nameplates are going away
for awhile,'' said the official, who asked not to be identified.

The nameplates could resurface on new products in the
future, but the company's plans are indefinite, he said.

Speculation about the future of both cars intensified last month after
Canadian Auto Workers union President Buzz Hargrove disclosed that GM
planned to close its assembly plant in Ste. Therese, Quebec, where the cars
are made, by fall 2000.

Hargrove was unable to persuade GM to keep the plant open beyond next fall,
but GM officials have declined to discuss publicly the fate of the cars.

The Camaro and Firebird have been an integral part of the GM model line
since the late 1960s, when the first models appeared in an effort to compete
with the popular Ford Mustang.

Combined sales have dropped to less than half of the 150,000 units GM
officials had thought they could sell when current models were planned in
the early 1990s, the newspaper said.
