Fw: Transmission Toast?

<x-charset iso-8859-1>I haven't heard of a VW trans being stuck in any gear but I have heard of a
BMW 5speed stuck in 4th gear and the trans was toast. I believe it is the
sheer HEAT that makes them stick into one gear, probably spinning or cooking
a bearing on the main shaft causing the shift forks to stick in one gear.
Another possibility is that a shift fork may have gotten stuck in a groove
or something then when they were wrenching on the shifter caused it to wedge
itself in further. I have taken my trans apart to do syncros in it (which
are pretty easy, pulled it out of my car and had it back in the same day)
and when I put it back together, the hardest part was lining all the gear
shift linkages and forks up. So, I am assuming that if the trans was
somehow Jammed into a gear, a part could get bent or broken in the shift
linkage part of the trans and cause it to either stick in a gear or throw it
out into neutral where it would probably stay. SO, either it is Crap, or
just needs some minor repair. Either way you will need to pull the trans
and tear into it. Cleanliness is very important when working with diffs and
trans. Lay everything out and make sure you put everything back together
the same way. Oh, and no need to go into the diff, the diff won't make it
stick in 4th!! Good luck and keep us posted!!
