Depending on where it is leaking, you might check the freeze plugs.  My
84 Jetta DLX was leaking from the back of the block and I thought it was
the head gasket.  I talked to a buddy of mine who is a VW mechanic and he
said to check the freeze plug.  Sure enough it was cracked.  Had another
friend's shop replace it.  About 3 months later, another mysterious water
leak.   Checked again, another freeze plug gone bad.  Took it to my
buddies shop and had them replace the other 2 freeze plugs.  No more
mysterious water leaks now.
