I've had the same problem last month.  You have to replace the whole
mechanism.  It should only take about 20 minutes.  Most (in my experience)
latch mechanisms will work ok, but they won't lock with a key.  There is a
small tab on the lever on Scirocco's but not on Rabbits or Jettas. If you
glued a tab onto a rabbit latch mechanism it could work.  You'll need a 7 or
6mm allen key, and a flathead screwdriver to do the swap.  Good luck.
