[VW engine in Mercedes ?]



Slightly off-topic, but I'm on a Mercedes list, too.  Someone asked why MB
uses the VR6.  One guy responded "The VR6 is a toy-- it's the same 30-valve
in the Audis".

...so I jumped in and corrected him about that... but I also said that I
didn't think MB would use any VW engines.  I stand corrected, however, and
I thought some of you might find this interesting:

That was a good explanation of the differences between VW's VR6 and Audi's 
V6. The one point you got wrong is that presently, MB does use VW's VR6 in 
the V-Class minivan available in Europe. It is built in Spain. I guess the 
reason they use VW's VR6 engine is that it is very compact. MB's own V6 being 
a 90-degree engine is larger. There are currently 4 models of the V-Class in 
production:  V 230, V 280, V 200 CDI, V 220 CDI. For more info on these MB
