I removed them and did have to bolt on a piece of plywood over the place where the normal speakers go. Just cut the plywood the shape that best fits all around the exsisting speaker area then cut the hole for the new speaker to fit in. Basicly all you are doing is building a shelf over the door to raise the base so a deeper speaker can fit plus you get more surface area. Then carpet or paint the plywood. Then mount the speaker to the plywood. Then attach that to the door panal. I realize my description sounds over simplified but the process was really easy and once you start you'll figure it out. I can also always remove this set up and put the old speakers and covers back in. All that will be there is screw holes, easily hidden.
