I just recently went through the same thing trying to figure out if I should retrofit or just recharge. First take it to a good A/C shop and check for leaks, If there are no leaks found just have them recharge with the old stuff (R-12) and it should last another 10 years or so before it needs to be recharged. This is what I did and the A/C is colder than I can ever remember.
