Yes, the plastic is know as a vapor barrier.  They are necessary to keep water
from running down the back of your door panels (and speakers if so equipped) -
VW door panels (especially on A2s) are made of cheap cardboard that
disintegrates when wet.  They are widely available and can be found in your
kitchen cabinet.  Take a plastic garbage bag, open and cut it so you have one
large piece of plastic.  Cut to fit and secure with duct tape or seam sealer.
