The  Corrado's and the synchro passat VR6's were both 2.9l in Europe. 
The only difference between the US Corrado's and other US VR6 is that the
corrado used a different Cat and exhaust manifold, which let the car
breath better and gave an extra 10hp.  There are factory 2.9 VR6's, just
none in the US.  A friend of mine bought a set of OEM 2.9 pistons from
Colin at Techtonics when he scored his 2.8 block and needed to bore it
out.  The 2.9 pistons go for around $1300 for the set of 6 (Youch!)
