This is a somewhat well known hoax.  And like any good spoof, it has
just enough truth, or a ring of truth, to sound plausible.  It was
debunked several times in the recent past, most notably on cnet.  I
imagine you could do a search of some sort for great internet hoaxes
in www.cnet.com, or even www.hotbot.com.
