The mechanic is wrong to deny this. It is possible that the pushrod ends
have worn which can cause the clutch to need a lot more adjusting that
normally needed with a new clutch. I replaced mine and regained quite a
few threads on the clutch cable adjustment. This wont be the sole casue
for your problem but it can add to the delima.

On the clutch lever, there is a shaft that runs into the 5th gear housing
where the throwout bearings lives ect. This shaft has a finger (Called a
"clutch lever") that presses onto the throwout bearing. These "fingers"
are known to break from time to time which could be your problem. The
easiest thing to do is remove the green end cap and if the finger is
broken, then it will be the first thing you (Or your mechanic) see's.
