if you remove the interior panel you can access
the back hatch locking mechanism.  1 phillips
screw is all you need to remove to push out the
tumbler.
you should then be able to unlatch the hatch
if the lock was the actual problem.
if it wasn't you can still probably figure out
how the mechanism works by looking right
at it, I would not even attempt to tell you how
it works in email.  I'm aweful at such things.

I had a similar problem in my Golf GT a few
years back.the tumbler just needed some
cleaning out and some grease.  The longer
you let it sit without working, the more likely
corrosion will take its toll.
