procedure for changing fuel filter?

I REALLY need to change my fuel filter in my '85. Since this is my first
watercooled VW, I need to know what the safest procedure is for changing
it. Things like relieving the fuel pressure. Also, I have a few fuel
lines that are weathered pretty bad. Do these lines have to come from
the dealer, or can I use any high-pressure fuel line?
