Faintly glowing battery and oxs lights

While driving home from TN the other night, I was surprised to see the
battery and oxs lights pop on, faintly.  hey stay on constantly, regardless
of engine rpm (except ONCE, I took the car up to 95 mph, and they blinked
off for a moment, then came back on - been on since.)

It's an 87 Scirocco 8v, no AC.  Any ideas what this might be?  If it's a
faulty alternator, I can replace that easily enough (lifetime warranty),
but the alternator is barely 8 weeks old..

Again, any/all ideas would be helpful. :-)
