Sounds to me like your fuel pre-pump is going bad.  This
comes up often on the list, and there was a recall on it. 
At least it's the cheaper / easier one to change...

Get a lower temp thermostat and fan switch.  I installed
'em in my 16v yesterday and could FINALLY use the a/c
without the car running practically AT the high temp line. 
Oil temp runs cooler too.
