  I had similar symptoms with my 84 8V, same vintage.

  It would start, engine would hesitate and shake for a few seconds,
sometimes it would die.

  At this point, it sounds like I had rust contamination: the rusted fuel
tank has been replaced, that caused the fuel filter to get clogged, so did
the fuel accumulator, the control pressure regulator ... Next to be replaced
is the fuel distributor.

  The warm engine sounded OK, but when cold, it would cough and stumble and
wheeze. Thery is that the particles get in a non sensitive place when gas
circulates, drop down where you don't want them when you stop, which makes
starts iffy.

  I guess if you remove the fuel filter and find stuff floating in it that
look like rust, you have the same problem. Hope that helps!
