I *thought* it was some sort of plug for the weep hole in the water
pump.  When I bought a new water pump to replace mine recently, the
thimble-like thing was lying loose in the box, minus sludge or goop of
any kind.  The directions that came with the pump didn't mention it, so
I figured it didn't have anything to do with my car, maybe the water
pumps fits a few cars besides Sciroccos.  I just left it off mine, and
it's working fine.  Now I'm worried.

Anyone with any definitive answers out there?
