couple questions for everyone

I was looking through the VW FAQs and found a couple interesting things that I will look for the next time I go to the junkyard. But, first I wanted to see if anyone has any insight/opinions on them:

1) programable wiper relay--sounds cool, anyone got'em? Like'em? FYI, relay numbers for programable relays are:
357 955 531
1hm 955 531 B <-- Bosche relay (I think)

2) valve cover baffle. They came stock on the 87+ A2cars, right? Anyone got one to fit on our A1s?

3) Fuel pump relay from 85+ car. In the FAQ it said that the newer relays allow the fuel pump to run when the ignition is first turned on in order to pressurize the system. I have an 84, and have been turning on ignition a waiting for a coupl eof seconds before I fire up the car thinking that I am pressurizing the system. Is this not happening? I think so b/c sometimes the car cranks a few times before catching, instead of firing right up on the first go.

4) Anyone taken valve adjusting shims from old solid head A1s and used'em again? Not b/c I 'm a cheap bastard (they are only $1.75 a piece) but b/c I can't find a place that has them stock. I have to order them, and I am thinking I could spend an afternoon at the junkyard tommorrow and get myself a nice little collection. QUESTION: Do they wear out a lot, or is it safe to use old ones (I don't have a micrometer to measure them)? Maybe it ain't worth it, and I should just order them?

Thanks

Victor
