    Possibly a loose electrical connection.  I had a similar problem 
w/my 81 which turned out to be a loose wire to the plug on the 
distributer grounding out, temporarily cutting off the spark.  Sounds 
like you are not getting any spark when it won't start.....maybe. 


    On a completely different subject.....

    Has anyone had any experience with or knowledge about a 
company called Drake engineering/racing.  They used to produce 
high performance heads and cams for early 1.6/1.8 VW motors.  
Any info would be appreciated..
