Dick,
you might need to use a press to get that thing to budge.  When I did all
four joints on my '86 8v last year, I was surprised that they all came off
the axles easily once the circlips were removed, as my Bentley said a press
would be necessary.  Perhaps on the earlier cars it's needed.
If it's to be sacrificed (the old joint, that is), one might find a wrench
just big enough to fit around the diameter of the axle, and small enough to
sit firmly on the cage of the CV joint.  Penetrating oil, small sledge, and
muscle power is all that's needed after that.
