Timing ADJUSTMENT & life

HEY, wondered how to adjust the timing on the 16V as the head was just port &
polished, and finally got it in.  Anyways, l was wondering if l could just
advance the distributor until l heard a little knock and then go back a few
degrees or if l should go through the hassle of using a timing light?   Any
help is appreciated and hope to see you all in Cincinatti.......  TIA
