Re: special tools/Tie-Rod serperator

I haven't had to do this yet, but I think I would use a tool as well. I saw the fork like tool advertised in Harbor Freight Tools for around $7. This was for American cars, but I am sure they can't be that expensive for our cars.

In case you are interested, while I was reading the book by Muir (How To Keep Your Rabbit, Jetta Scirocco Alive) I remember him writing about hitting both ends of the ball joint with a hammer AT THE SAME TIME so as to loosen it up. If you want me to, I can check the procedure more carefully in the book and post it to the list. He did caution that you had to be VERY careful to hit the ball joint, and nothing else! If you ask me, I would rather use a tool, especially if its cheap.

In my opinion, you must have a tie-rod separator (ball-joint separator).

The nut presses the ball joint tightly against the steering arm.For me,
they're always a b*tch to get off. I nearly always end up using a fork
type ball joint separator.

good luck!

I know I asked previously if I needed a special 'puller' to detach my tie
rod from the steering arm and get to my tie rod boot and the response was
no. However can someone explain to me why they recommend using one in the
Bentley and the Haynes manuals. Isn't it just a bolt holding the rod to
the
arm? Is there some sideways pull on the bolt?

thanx
