spongy brakes..?

i test drove my car today (81 rabbit with a 16v conversion)...and the
brakes felt real spongy......

i did a complet 16v brake upgrade (10.1 calipers on the front, rear discs,
bigger booster and master cylinder, and bled the system completely after
installing everything.........

but, the brakes seem to have a "dead space" .......you press the pedal and
it's like no resistance...and then all of the sudden they catch......

does this sound like air in the lines?....or a different problem
entirely?......

i've never had a master cylinder go bad, or air in the lines, so i'm not
sure exactly what that feels like........fluid level appears ok, so i'm at
a bit of a loss
