heater core test?

hello one and all.  i've got a busted heater core in my car.  so i went
out and bought me a new heater core for $80 CDN.  then i noticed that i
had an extra one in my garage! (it came from an 84 jetta GLI with
375,000km on it)  so, question is, how do i test this unit to see that
it is in good shape?  i'd rather use the old one than the new one, then
trade the core for some wires ad plugs or something....thanks.
