Very good suggestions and explanation of the
problem with old electrical systems!

The other area to check is the connections
to the ignition switch and headlight switch
which can cause reduced voltage to the system.
I have seen another 0.5 to 1.0 volt drop through
these connections.

I prefer to replace the battery/ground cables
and put a larger alternator supply line rather
than try to solder these.  They get pretty
badly corroded inside the terminals and the 
solder flux may not break down this oxidation.

It is good that you posted this, as such volt
drops can cause all kinds of weird electrical
problems.  

Keep that system voltage up above 12 volts!
