Granted, Ive never heard it on a H20 motor, but last summer, in my 58, 
it began pinging because I had it too far advanced.  It sounded like all 
hell was breaking loose under load conditions.  Kinda like throwing 
castinettes (those little hand held-spanish-clickey-things) down wooden 
stairs.  It should happen just under load (putting your foot down, 
starting from a stop, going uphill...)
The h20 motor -when pinging- might sound a little deeper with that thick 
block and all those water jackets 'round it...
