final drive

ok, thanks to the efforts of Nate, I'm going to
be building a 4K tranny on the side.
One of the things I would like to do is stick a 
diesel ring n pinion in.  Something like a 4.20
or 4.30.  Does anyone know what cars I can pull 
these from?  Years?
Can I make up for the lower final drive with a 
longer fifth gear on the top end to prevent freeway
buzziness? (I have a half hour commute every day)
