When you turn your key to the on position (not start), Do you hear the fuel
pump?  If you have a 16v, you should hear a little buzz for like 5 seconds. I
don't know if the 8v'ers do that.  I had sort of the same problem and It
turned out the fuel pump relay craped out. There is a way to test the relay by
removing it and putting a jumper wire in the terminals(not sure which ones)
$45 dollars at the dealer or $2.00 at the Junkyard if you could find one. Hope
